The Orton-Gillingham Approach and Focusing on the Individual Student

Jason Halpern, the founder and managing partner of JMH Development, has several interests outside of running his real estate development company. One of the organizations that Jason Halpern contributes to is the Max Scholar program.

The Max Scholar program assists struggling readers with reading and writing skills. One of the methods it uses for instruction is the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Named for the contributions of neuropsychiatrist and pathologist Samuel Orton and psychologist and educator Anna Gillingham, the Orton-Gillingham Approach focuses on individualized instruction with the student.

While primarily used for one-on-one instruction, it can also be applied to small group instruction as well. Moreover, methods used to assist with reading and writing difficulties can also be applied to difficulties in math.

The approach is structured but allows students to work at their pace, grasping concepts, and then building on these concepts with newer ones all within the framework of adjusting to the students’ personal needs. A student with dyslexia is a perfect example of how this approach can be used to assist students.

Students with dyslexia are expected to read and write at the same competency as non-dyslexic students, but to get them to this point, the teacher must work one-on-one with them to help them learn how to recognize, sort, and organize material, something that non-dyslexic students can do independently.

The founder and managing partner of JMH Development for the past 10 years, Jason Halpern has led the company to construct and manage numerous properties in the New York City area, including several in historically significant landmarked buildings. Among Jason Halpern and JMH’s notable projects is 184 Kent, which was originally a warehouse along the Brooklyn waterfront.

Originally built in 1913, 184 Kent was home to The Austin Nichols Company, the largest grocer in the United States. After a complete renovation that preserved the building’s historic integrity, it is now home to 340 luxury rental apartments. The property features 20,000 square feet of landscaped courtyard and 10,000 square feet of amenities, including a modern gym with views of the East River. At street level, the building houses retailers such as Soul Cycle and various restaurants.

Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 184 Kent received the 2011 Building Brooklyn Award in the category of adaptive reuse.
